RoastLog website

New users should have already received a username and password from a RoastLog staff member. Before we can go any further, please make sure you have that.

This will be a very quick overview on how to login and navigate through the RoastLog web application.

Logging in

Logging in is simple enough, simply navigate over to https://roastlog.com/login/, enter your username and password. After that is successful, you’ll be taken to your Inbox which will be empty since you haven’t logged any roasts yet. Don’t worry, we’ll come back to that later.

First time users

At a very minimum, first time users will need to do the following after logging in, and before using the system to log roasts:

Inbox

The inbox is modeled after the all too familiar email inbox. Here, you’ll be able to see all of the roasts for your account in a linear time-line. On the left is a box which allows you to search for particular roasts by date. At the top right of the screen is a box to let you search for particular roasts by bean name.

Each individual roast can be viewed by clicking on the “Roast ID” number. This will take you to the detailed page for that one particular roast.

To compare roasts, simply select one or more by clicking the check-boxes in the left column, then click the “Compare Selected” button in the upper left. After clicking this button, you’ll be taken to the Profiles and Cuppings page.

Profiles & Cuppings

Once you’ve selected one or more roasts and clicked “Compare”, this page view will be available. Here, you can view the roasts which you’re interested in, all in one screen.

Down below the roasting profiles are table which will show the previous cupping notes for these roasts, in addition to a form which will allow you to add new cupping notes to these roasts.

Inventory

The inventory page is the place which keeps track of all of the beans which are currently active in your roastery. To add a new bean to your inventory, simply click “New Coffee” in the upper left corner, fill out the fields you’re interested in and hit save.

Note

On June 11, 2011, we released our much expanded inventory management system. While these docs are still a work in progress and are missing much detail, feel free to watch a recording of the inventory webinar we gave to our users.

Roastables

A Roastable is a representation of one of your physical coffees. With RoastLog, we give you the ability to treat a particular bean or pre-roast blend differently by using the notiong of a Roastable.

For example, you may have an Colombian coffee which your roast dark and light. While these roasts are handled different while they’re being roasted, they are born from the same batch/lot/bags of coffee. In this case what you would do is create two different Roastables, possibly calling them “Colombian light” and “Colombian dark”. In the RoastLogger application, these two names would show up separately, meaning you could have your favorite profiles be completely different based on the purpose of these Roastables. However, in terms of your inventory, your Colombian bean’s available quantity would change whenever you roast either one of these roastables.

At the same time, a Roastable can be a pre-roast blend of coffees. By taking two or more of your avaialable beans and creating a Roastable blend, RoastLog is able to keep track of how your current coffee inventory is changing.

There is some more information at this blog post we did about Roastables.

Equipment

This page keeps track of what machines you have in your roasting operation. You should have at least one roaster in your equipment list.

Settings

There are some personal and account settings which live on this page. Probably the most interesting when getting started are the settings for time zone and units for temperature and mass. Simply set these to whatever your prefer.
